Original Song: Withered Wings

6-Jan-2017

I penned this song over the holidays while thinking about how far I've come since I parted ways with a toxic person...and how far I still have to go.

*****

WITHERED WINGS

Justifications creep

Like slow but determined slithering things

I try to muscle forward with

Withered wings

But that cliff somehow

Now seems too steep

I'm grateful for the work, the rise, the start

There are so many glassy constellations

Forming in my sky

But then my heart

Spreads my hopes apart

And I feel like I'm falling up

For reasons I can't identify

Justifications creep

Like slow but determined slithered things

I try to muscle forward with

Withered wings

But that cliff somehow

Now seems too steep

How fast joy fades to sorrow

When I'm watching others' steps

Why not fix my eyes on tomorrow?

Find my stride instead

Justifications creep

But you know they're pretty weak-minded, cowardly things

Bet I can muscle forward, even with

Withered wings

When I look at that cliff right now

Just want to close my eyes and leap
