As a risk-averse introvert, I have always been fascinated by the thrill-seekers. Why does anyone climb Everest when one in three climbers do not return? Why do people board submersibles that push the limits of human endurance to catch a glimpse of the rusted-out Titanic? Why would the most brilliant people alive train their whole lives to go to space when the smallest miscalculation guarantees death? Maybe the key to bravery is making peace with encountering the unknown, whether that's on a snowy peak at the top of the world or whatever comes after this life. I explore these ideas and more in my short story about an unlikely space explorer, "Glow," which was selected for publication in HamLit's 2024 Special Issue: After Dark.
In "Glow," the reader experiences the wonder of space travel through the fresh eyes of a tiny explorer. But not all journeys are easy, and this one is of particular ill-fated renown. As the inevitable rapidly approaches, the little explorer holds on to what they've learned and who they've come to love in order to find the courage to face the unknown.
Thanks in advance for reading "Glow" in HamLit's 2024 Special Issue: After Dark!
